Hi John, I want to know what you think.

On Sunday, Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia announced that he won’t support the For the People Act. The bill would reverse laws passed by state Republicans to limit early and mail-in voting and would force major-party candidates for president and vice president to release 10 years’ worth of personal and business tax returns.

Senator Manchin vowed never to end the filibuster rule in the Senate that would allow for a simple majority to pass legislation. He seems to be hoping that compromise and moderation can magically return to the Senate, but in my view, these hopes and dreams are getting in the way of essential progress.

But I want to know what you think. Is Senator Manchin protecting democracy or standing in the way of voting rights for citizens? Fill out our survey so I can hear from you.

Senator Manchin’s announcement gives me concern. He is talking about the importance of voting rights, but his actions are delaying protections from being implemented. He’s stopping some of the most important reforms that are needed, and he isn’t able to force Republicans to the table on a watered-down version of the bill.

We all want the Senate to work, but Republicans have shown time and time again that they aren’t interested in bipartisan voting rights. In fact, Republicans' long-term success hinged on them excluding certain populations of people from voting rather than convincing the majority of Americans they have the best plans for the future.

Do you think the Senate should get rid of the filibuster to pass legislation by majority-vote? I want to hear from you.

Thanks for your input,
Hank Johnson
