John,
During her first foreign trip to Central America this week, Vice President Kamala Harris had one message to communicate to asylum seekers and others considering migrating to the United States:
“Do not come.”
Callous words like these run counter to U.S. and international law, which protects the rights of people seeking asylum, and ignore the long history of U.S. involvement in the region. For people who are making the difficult decision to flee corruption, crime, and violence in the hopes of building better lives for their families, no message is likely to change their minds.
But here’s what words like this do accomplish: They reinforce the anti-immigrant and xenophobic policies put into place by the Trump administration.
This isn’t only about words. The Biden administration has so far failed to reverse Trump-era immigration policies and address this issue with the urgency, care, and compassion it calls for. That’s why we’re asking: Will you join us in calling on the Biden administration to end Trump-era anti-immigration policies and stop deportations by adding your name to our petition?

Last year, voters rejected the Republican anti-immigrant agenda and delivered Congress and the White House to Democrats on the promise of jobs and care for our communities and the reversal of punitive border policies that have torn families apart.
Those policies include Trump’s order more than a year ago to invoke a provision of U.S. health law — known as Title 42 — that allows federal agents at the border to turn back migrants without even giving them an opportunity to apply for asylum.
These and other Trump-era policies need to end. But that’s not enough. We also need to go even bigger and bolder on reimagining a just and fair immigration system.
When you sign our petition, you are sending a message that you are in the fight for a country that works for all of us — a fight that too many Democrats are still choosing to ignore when it comes to immigration. Will you add your name and join us in calling on the Biden administration to end Trump-era immigration policies and stop deportations?
