In the course of my public service, I’ve been an impeachment manager who prosecuted a corrupt president. I’ve represented the incredible people of Orlando in Congress, with pride. And now, I’m running to represent the people of Florida in the Senate.

But before all that, I was a Black girl who grew up poor in the South. I went to segregated schools. I could only dream of a seat at the table in politics—or even just being in the room. Nearly every day, I think about the fact that I am a descendant of slaves who knew they would not make it, but dreamed and prayed that one day I would.

I made it—and I stand on the shoulders of giants who fought and shed blood and tears before me. Here’s what I see: a modern-day Republican Party in the image of Donald Trump.
