The October 2019 issue of the Clearinghouse’s quarterly research digest provides abstracts of articles from the peer-reviewed literature on male circumcision, with a focus on voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) for HIV prevention. Featured Articles
* A systematic review ([link removed]) of studies of VMMC demand creation suggests that the most acceptable, effective interventions are financial incentives offered as fair compensation (for example, for travel and lost wages) and education or counselling provided by people who are influential in their communities or have experience with VMMC.
* Active surveillance ([link removed]) conducted at six sites in five Kenyan counties demonstrated that VMMC performed with the ShangRing device was effective and safe, with a complication rate of 0.3 percent, but its uptake varied widely in different settings.
* A cohort study ([link removed]) found increases in VMMC and antiretroviral coverage and reductions in new HIV infections after rapid expansion of combination HIV prevention in four HIV-hyperendemic communities in Uganda.
