Today, the United States Senate approved the nomination of Zahid Quraishi to be appointed as a U.S. District Court Judge for the District of New Jersey. The Muslim Public Affairs Council applauds this historic moment as Judge Quraishi is now the first American Muslim to serve as an Article III federal judge.

The Biden Administration is fulfilling its promise to make the federal government more representative of the rich diversity of America. In the past few months, we have seen an American Muslim woman, Deputy Director of the National Economic Council Sameera Fazili, speak from the White House dais on economic policy. President Biden has also nominated Dilawar Syed for the Small Business Administration and Lina Khan for the Federal Trade Commission. Judge Zahid Quraishi’s confirmation is a hallmark in this new era of progress for American Muslims, breaking barriers by filling roles that have not been historically filled by Muslims.

We would like to thank Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ), Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY) for shepherding Judge Quraishi’s confirmation through the Committee and the Senate.

We look forward to even more well-qualified Muslims contributing to all branches of the government as we proceed under a President that prioritizes representation of all Americans. MPAC is partnering with other Muslim organizations to make that reality our ultimate goal.
