STAY VIGILANT - PHISHING ATTEMPTS AIMED AT HAWAII REPUBLICANS!
Dear Republicans,

Please be aware of, and remain vigilant against a series of phishing attempts we’ve seen going out to party members.

One version is from “Chairman – Signe Godfrey” but if you look at the actual email associated, it isn’t from Signe’s account. The email body stated “Do you have a moment? I am going into a meeting now, no calls so just reply back to my mail.”

The reason they said “no calls” of course, is that you’d validate right away that it’s a fake email. Usually, the way these scams work is that once you’ve replied and therefore shown your trust, they’ll either ask you to send money for some good cause, or they’ll ask you to click a link for some reason. Clicking that link will upload some form of Ransomware – meaning they’ll inject a virus after you click on the link and then lock down your computer until you pay them. They’ll usually tell you to buy gift cards and have you provide the information needed to redeem them over the phone.

How do you identify scam emails before making a mistake?
1. Start with the expectation: Were you expecting an email from this person / this company, and is it usual for this form of notification to occur?
2. Look at the email address not just the name of the sender. If you don’t recognize the email address don’t reply or comply.
3. Look at the subject line: Does the subject make sense? In this case the subject line is just the first name of the recipient – which doesn’t make sense.
4. Look at the request: Does it make sense? Is the grammar, word choice and punctuation correct?
5. Anytime you’re suspicious of an email and want to confirm the sender, just send a completely new email using an email address that you know works. Or better yet, call or text them.
6. If you think it’s a scam email, use the “report spam/phishing” function within your email system or simply delete it without opening it.

I’ll check with HPD for their advice, but wanted to send out this notification to warn everyone.

Stay Vigilant!
Steve Lipscomb
