Friend,

More than a month after the California State Water Resources Control Board
ordered BlueTriton Brands -- formerly Nestlé -- to stop taking water out
of the San Bernardino forests, the company is still draining the valley
for its Arrowhead brand.

BlueTriton has requested a hearing to appeal the order, and they continue
to take the water in the meantime.(1,2)

BlueTriton paid $4.3 billion to acquire Nestlé Waters North America, and
it’s not going to give up the San Bernardino water without a fight.(3) Our
coalition with Story of Stuff and SumOfUs has collected nearly 50,000
signatures calling on the U.S. Forest Service to stop allowing
Nestlé/BlueTriton to take California’s water, and we’re planning a big
public action to get the media and grassroots energy on our side.

For more than 125 years, Nestlé has been pumping water out of the
Strawberry Canyon in San Bernardino and selling it back to us as Arrowhead
bottled water. And when BlueTriton bought Nestlé’s American bottling
company, it assumed it was getting the water permit for San Bernardino
along with it — despite the fact that the permit expired in 1988.(4,5)

The company is using the expired permit to pull more than 25 times the
original designated limit of water out of the ground for the paltry sum of
$2,100 a year.(6)

Now the U.S. Forest Service is deciding whether to renew the permit,
giving us the best chance in years to stop the theft of California’s
water.(7)

This news comes just as scientists are reporting that California is
suffering from one of the driest years on record and is facing the
possibility of a devastating fire season.(8) We need every drop of water
possible to stay in the state.
