Coming Out Day is this tomorrow, October 11th. Coming Out can be a defining moment in an LGBTIQ persons life, and yet, viewed as unnecessary for others.
For example, in some places, the battlecries of owning our queerness, "'we're here, we're queer, so get used to it!"' has been surreptitiously replaced with vulnerably insecure teenagers confessing what may feel like the ultimate sin to a loved one.
And although coming out for many of us certainly has it's hardships and backlash, there is no comparison when our perspective is global.
We at OutRight understand all too well the difficulties LGBTIQ people face across the globe – working in places where being identified as LGBTIQ can lead to imprisonment or death. OutRight has been fighting for LGBTIQ people globally since 1990. Today, 68 countries still criminalize same-sex relations, but our movement is growing stronger across the world in spite of the backlash.
We hope they inspire you to share yours. Our option to have a choice in coming out on our own terms should not be taken for granted.
Share your coming out story in solidarity with someone that never had one! Make sure to tag us – @OutRightIntl – in your #NationalComingOutDay social media posts.
