It was a reeeeal shame to me to hear that Joe Manchin is planning to vote with Mitch McConnell + the GOP to uphold the filibuster and block the passage of the For the People Act.
Here's what I can promise to you, John: If I get to the U.S. Senate, I'll be 100% on board with saving our democracy — but I'll need your urgent help to get there.
I think common-sense legislation to expand voting rights is a no-brainer — which is why I recently wrote an op-ed for CNN explaining why protecting our democracy is so important.
If I was in the Senate now, my “yes” vote on the For The People Act would not be about my party. It would not be about politics. This is about doing what I know is right, guaranteeing everyone has the right to vote.
The contents of the bill are not controversial. And the fact that zero Republicans have signed on to a bill designed to ensure all Americans are granted their constitutional right to cast a ballot says far more about the state of the Republican party than the bill itself.
We need to pass S.1 through the Senate and send it to President Biden’s desk. And when Senate Republicans attempt to tank the bill by using the racist filibuster, then the Democrats — including Joe Manchin — must take action and abolish the filibuster to make sure S.1 is passed. The Democrats who are refusing to reform the filibuster are telling us that a silly Senate rule is more important to them than democracy itself. They’re wrong.
We don’t have much time and we need to act now. It is time to abolish the filibuster. Pass the For the People Act. Our democracy depends on it.
