John xxxxxx,
Nothing will bring back Eric Garner.
Or Botham Jean. Or Tamir Rice. Or Sandra Bland. Or Philando Castile. Or so many more.
They should all still be alive today.
But their lives were cut short by excessive use of police force.
Eric Garner called out “I can’t breathe” 11 times as officers placed him in an illegal chokehold. Five years later, the words have become a rallying cry for justice against police brutality.
Let’s be clear: the vast majority of law enforcement officers serve honorably under difficult conditions — both risking and sometimes even losing their lives to protect us.
Yet persistent instances of police violence have undermined the relationship between law enforcement and the communities they are sworn to protect throughout America, including in New York City. We have to do better, John xxxxxx.
Excessive force tactics like the chokehold have no place in our society. That’s why Hakeem introduced the Eric Garner Excessive Use of Force Prevention Act to make the chokehold an illegal civil rights violation.
This is an important step toward restoring trust and goodwill between law enforcement and the communities they serve. And Hakeem stands in solidarity with Gwen Carr, Eric’s mother, as she calls upon Congress to pass this critical civil rights legislation.
We must honor Eric Garner’s memory by committing to the real work it will require to attain justice. Add your name next to Hakeem’s to urge Congress to pass the Eric Garner Excessive Use of Force Prevention Act.
In solidarity,
Chairman Jeffries HQ
