Hi Reader,
This week, ProPublica published the first installment of what we believe is one of the most important investigations in our newsroom’s history — a story that exposes how the ultra-rich in this country avoid paying the kinds of taxes that most Americans ante up each year. Mega-billionaires like Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk and Michael Bloomberg exploit the tax systems we have in place to pay nothing in federal taxes. In fact, in 2011, Jeff Bezos actually took a $4,000 tax credit for his kids.
We received this data from an anonymous source, and we chose to publish it because we believe that doing so serves the public interest in fundamental ways, deepening interest and understanding of a complex system that demands attention and deserves scrutiny. This investigation is staggering and epitomizes what we do best: using unbiased facts to reveal important information that, until now, have been hidden from most Americans.
ProPublica’s model is simple. Using the moral force of investigative journalism, we expose abuses of power and betrayals of the public trust in an effort to spur reform through the sustained spotlighting of wrongdoing and injustice. We’ve got a good track record of doing just that: laws get changed, innocent people are freed from prison, policies get introduced and more. Today, on the first day of our summer member drive, I’m asking you to help us keep it up by making a donation of any amount. <[link removed]>
As a nonprofit newsroom, we rely on donations from our readers to help pay the bills. For this investigation, we’ve assembled a team of reporters, editors, data crunchers, video producers and more, all of whom are working hard to expose the truth about who really shoulders the burden of funding the American government. This kind of journalism takes time and is expensive. But we believe it’s worth it. For years, the debate around tax-reform has revolved around questions of whether each citizen is paying their fair share. Now, everyone, including lawmakers, have specifics at their fingertips that show how little our wealthiest citizens truly (and legally) pay.
As a reader of ProPublica, I hope you believe it’s worth it, too. Make a donation today and help ProPublica continue this critical work.
Thanks so much, Jill Shepherd Proud ProPublican <[link removed]>
