The war is on over a pack of 5 bad state Senate “housing” bills and 2 state Assembly bills that destroy Black and Latino homeowner communities, trash the California Environmental Quality Act, let city councils override voter-approved ballot measures, and destroy affordable housing to build tech-centric luxury studios.

What state are we living in, again?

On Saturday, join key strategists to go over the looming legislative calendar and what YOU, in the communities, can do to stop the Seven Bad Bills:

  1. SB 6: (“Kill the Mom & Pops”) Jettisons city planning to let developers wipe out business & shopping areas to wedge in EVEN MORE luxury apartment blocks.
  2. SB 8: (“Let’s Blame the Cities”) Extends SB 330 by 5 yrs: bans more than 5 city hearings or workshops on a project; bans downzoning, even for parks, unless another area is upzoned; lets proponents sue city taxpayers for $10K for any unit a city doesn’t approve.
  3. SB 9 (“Let’s End Homeownership” by Atkins & Wiener)Crushes single-family zoning, a threat to 7M households at all income levels. Wiener has called yards “immoral.”
  4. SB 10: (“14-Unit Buildings Everywhere” by Wiener) Lets cities adopt laws to allow 14-unit luxury projects in single-family areas and commercial areas. AND lets cities override land protection laws approved by voters. Only courts can do this. Period.
  5. SB 478: (“One-Bedrooms You Can’t Afford” by Wiener) Lets developers destroy family multi-unit housing to cram 14 small luxury units on a typical 5,000 sq. ft. lot. Written for well-off Bay Area tech workers, SB 478 will be a crowded disaster for others.
  6. AB 1322: (“Voters are Fools”) An absurd and unprecedented plan to let city councils override housing laws approved by voters. Only courts can overturn voters. Period.
  7. AB 1401: (“Just Take the Bus!”) Slashes parking in new developments, forcing Californians to park far from home. This theory, aimed at boosting transit use, was a failure well before COVID.
