Last night, I was proud to see Delegate Hala Ayala win the Democratic nomination for Lieutenant Governor.

If Hala wins the general election, she’ll make history as the first woman to serve the Commonwealth as Lieutenant Governor and the first woman of color elected statewide in Virginia.

Hala has experienced firsthand the struggles faced by far too many families -- she lost her father to gun violence, barely survived childbirth and has struggled to feed her family.

But instead of knocking her down, these experiences have made her an incredibly effective legislator, inspiring her to expand Medicaid for more than 500,000 Virginians, increase teachers' salaries and so much more.
