Democratic Senator Joe Manchin announced he will vote against the For the People Act — killing the chances of passing this comprehensive voting rights bill in the 50-50 Senate, which was already a tall task with the filibuster standing in the way of a vote.
Passing comprehensive voting rights reform is critical to the health and future of our democracy as Republicans wage partisan attacks on voting rights in state legislatures across the country.
It’s also a deeply popular policy, with broad support from voters across the political spectrum.
John, this is a slap in the face to the organizers and activists who laid the groundwork to flip the Senate, hold the House, and send Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to the White House — electing a government that was supposed to work for the people.
The only way we make sure our progressive agenda isn’t left in the hands of someone like Joe Manchin is by expanding our majorities in Congress. No one person should have the power to gatekeep legislation this important to the American people.
