John,
“I'm getting calls from all over the country -- people who have read about TEAACH and how they can pass this bill in their state.”
That's Illinois state Rep. Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz reflecting on the fact that in the midst of growing anti-Asian hate, state legislators passed a historic bill to make Illinois the first state to require Asian American history be taught in public schools.
As Asian Americans, we've often been told we “don't belong,” in more ways than one. Our country's leaders don't reflect our presence, and our contributions have been erased and downplayed throughout American history. Requiring public schools to teach our history is a step in the right direction -- and that's why Rep. Grace Meng and other Asian American legislators in Congress are fighting for AAPI education at the federal level.
But Republican-controlled legislators have blocked similar measures in states nationwide. And they're doing their best to ban any effort to add diversity to history lessons.
We need compassion, empathy, and inclusion now more than ever -- and that requires a mutual understanding of who we are as Americans and as a country. As we push for more inclusive legislation in state legislatures, we need to know where engaged voters like you stand:
John, do you want to see the TEAACH Act in your state?
