People across America faced a housing crisis long before the pandemic pushed millions of additional families into poverty. One in four renters was spending half of their monthly income on rent, and nearly a million tenants are evicted each year. Homelessness keeps getting worse across the country. We desperately need the federal government to take bold action.
Supported by key affordable housing groups across America, that’s exactly what this bill does — takes immediate action to ensure everyone has a place to call home. Some of the important details include:
- Investing $100 billion in existing, critical housing grant programs
- Creating a new grant program to invest in humane infrastructure; providing municipalities with $6 billion a year through a flexible program that will allow them to address their most urgent infrastructure needs related to housing and homelessness
- Incentivizing local investments in humane, evidence-based models to support people experiencing homelessness, including alternatives to criminalization and penalization
- Providing $10 billion for FEMA emergency food and shelter grants
Pramila’s legislation meets the scale of the dire nationwide crisis. And together, we can pressure Congress to take immediate action. Help us put that pressure on by adding your name to the Housing is a Human Right Act today!
