The immigration crisis at the southern border is a direct result of deliberate and cruel decisions being made by the Trump administration. Congress has allowed the current administration to use resources to maximize cruelty, rather than meet real human needs that exist.

The fight for humane immigration policies is personal to us. That’s why Generation Progress has joined the #DefundHate Campaign. The Defund Hate Campaign is a coalition of immigrant rights and progressive organizations that are urging Congress to reduce funding to agencies like Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Congress must fight the atrocities Trump is committing at the southern border and throughout this country by decreasing funding for the agencies that drive these abuses—ICE and CBP.

Decreasing their funding is the most effective way to block the implementation of Trump’s horrifying anti-immigrant agenda. Join us in telling Congress to stand with immigrant communities and #DefundHate.

Congress will be back from recess next week to continue negotiating funding for the government and the Trump administration has asked for billions of taxpayer dollars to go ICE and CBP. Both ICE and CBP have proven time and again that they simply will not use more money to improve their practices or the care of migrants held in their custody. Instead, they’ll use it to expand existing detention camps, or open new ones, without improving current conditions.

We demand an immigration system that respects the human rights of all people. Our country would be better and safer if we invested in programs that build up our communities—like housing, education, health care, and natural disaster response funding—rather than directing an endless stream of money to bankroll xenophobic policies.
