I experienced a great deal of trauma as a child, as both of my parents passed away by the time I was 12. I could have fallen through the cracks— but phenomenal public school teachers, mentors, and a school counselor believed in me and gave me a second chance.

These impactful figures inspired me to become an educator myself and eventually led me to serve as President Obama’s Secretary of Education.

I’ve been dedicated to education my whole life. I’ve seen education through just about every angle: a student, a teacher, a principal, a professor, a leader of schools and school systems, and a leader of an education civil rights organization.

What I’ve learned from my many years in education is clear as day: everyone deserves to be seen, heard, and to be given a chance to reach their full potential. I intend to bring this same attitude to Annapolis when I serve as Maryland’s next governor.
