Friend,
As the 50th anniversary of Nixon’s declaration of the “war on drugs” approaches on June 17, we just released a brand new poll with the ACLU showing that an overwhelming majority of Americans believe the drug war has failed and strongly support ending criminal penalties for drug possession.
For the first time, the public agrees that it’s time to decriminalize drugs and reinvest resources into treatment and health services. More and more people are understanding that the drug war was a lie and drugs were never the enemy.
Momentum is on our side and we need to force Congress to act. Tell your lawmakers to support federal drug decriminalization.
Drug possession is the most arrested offense in the country and disproportionately targets low-income and Black, Latinx, and Indigenous people.
Ending these arrests – by decriminalizing all drugs – is the most important next step we can take to end the racist drug war.
We already did it in Oregon, which became the first state to decriminalize the personal use and possession of all drugs and expand access to treatment and other health services. Now we must continue pushing for decriminalization in the rest of the states and at the federal level.
DPA is leading the effort to build support for decriminalization in Congress so we can begin dismantling 50 years of failed drug war policies. Join us by telling your members of Congress to support drug decriminalization.
This new poll proves what we’ve been saying, that Americans are more than ready for a different approach. Together, we won’t stand for another 50 years of the drug war and we must do everything we can to end it.
