Our mission here at Texas Standard is, of course, to bring you the news from a Texas perspective. That's not hard. The world is interconnected. Something that happens abroad can have an effect here. Vice President Kamala Harris' trips to Guatemala and Mexico are obvious examples considering the huge role immigration has had and continues to have on the land we now call Texas. But also take the ongoing struggle in India with the coronavirus.

In today's show you'll hear about the impact it's having on one Austin woman. There's also plenty going on between the Red River and the Rio Grande and you'll find some of our top picks from the week just below. Among our recommendations is a roundtable conversation analyzing the state of the GOP in Texas. One of our experts told me that Republicans seem to be winning in spite of self-imposed challenges. And from the other side of the aisle, there's the account of a first-term Democratic state representative from Dallas about her experience in the just-finished legislative session. Thanks for reading – and listening.

Hi everyone! My name is Kaysie Ellingson, I’m the news director for our growing NPR station out in Lubbock, Texas Tech Public Media. Originally, I’m from Southern California but my first dive into public media was at the NPR/PBS station in Anchorage, Alaska, producing

short digital documentaries . I decided to move back south and landed in the South Plains four years ago, almost exactly to the date! I started out producing videos centered on the history of Texas Tech and eventually moved to leading the production of our major, multiplatform series “

Beyond the Report: The Status of Women in Lubbock.” Last year, after the pandemic erupted and we saw a major need for information dissemination in our community, I transitioned to reporting on COVID-19 for radio. Prior to this we didn’t have a news team. From that point, the rest is history. Over the last year I’ve focused on not only growing the team, but on covering

banning of critical race theory in Texas and currently, my team and I are gearing up for the release of the second season of “Beyond the Report.” This year, we’re diving into historically racist zoning practices in Lubbock and how those decisions continue to impact our predominately minority neighborhoods. It’s been such an incredible opportunity to join forces with The Texas Newsroom and see our little station grow. I’m honored to have played a part in that!
