As states begin to re-open and we continue to rebound from the pandemic recession, right now is our opportunity to build back better and make smart investments for future success.
That's why I'm urging Congress to pass the American Jobs Plan to build and reinvest in a new economy . This plan will create millions of jobs, rebuild our infrastructure and transportation and position the United States to better compete internationally. We haven't seen this kind of investment in America since interstate highways and train systems were built, and it is long overdue.
After decades of neglect, our roads, bridges, transit systems and water systems are crumbling. We see this too often here in Connecticut. Our electric grid is vulnerable. Too many lack basic internet access and quality housing. We are falling behind on research and development, manufacturing and training. As a result, the U.S. ranks 13th when it comes to the overall quality of our infrastructure. All of this is unacceptable, and Congress can do something about it. Now is the time to reinvest in strengthening our infrastructure and global competitiveness and create good-paying jobs for American communities.

Now is our chance. We are finally on the move again. Last quarter, the economy expanded at a 6.4% annual rate. Job postings in May were nearly 26% above pre-pandemic levels. The unemployment rate fell to 5.8%, the lowest level since the pandemic began. COVID cases and deaths have fallen. People are getting vaccinated and re-emerging. But we still have more work to do. Every day, I hear from my constituents that investment in infrastructure, transportation, and broadband are critical for livelihoods in Connecticut. I'm ready to work with President Biden and my colleagues in Congress to pass the American Jobs Plan to create greater economic opportunities and good-paying jobs in every state.
