Republicans' attacks on voting rights are threatening our democracy. Across the country, hundreds of voter suppression bills are being introduced, inspired by Trump’s Big Lie about the 2020 election.

Democrats have the power to put a stop to these racist laws. We can pass the For the People Act to protect our democracy. But we have to end or reform the filibuster to do it.

Right now, Democratic senators Joe Manchin from West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema from Arizona are standing in the way by protecting the filibuster. We have to keep up the pressure to make sure they do the right thing and protect our democracy.

Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he plans to put the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act up for a vote later this month. NOW is the time to pressure Manchin and Sinema to do the right thing.

The truth is, we can’t foster bipartisanship without a properly functioning democracy. The filibuster is preventing both.

In fact, these bills have bipartisan support among voters. Both are supported by a majority of Americans — including a majority of West Virginians and Arizonans. But as long as Mitch McConnell holds a veto, they will never become law.

We need to call out Manchin and Sinema’s hypocrisy and demand they safeguard democracy before it is too late.

I still fundamentally believe it is possible to win this fight. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema were co-sponsors of the For the People Act last Congress. But right now, they need to feel pressure from the people who put Senate Democrats and Joe Biden in power.
