The second bill I co-sponsored as a member of Congress was the Paycheck Fairness Act. That was back in 2009.

Today we had the chance to pass this bill in the Senate. We had a chance to finally secure equal pay for women. Instead, Republicans filibustered it — blocking it from proceeding to a vote.

This is unacceptable, folks.

The concept here is pretty simple: Women deserve equal pay. But Senate Republicans have become so disconnected from the lives of American workers and families, they don’t even see — or care — about the impacts of unequal pay in their home states. The filibuster means their callous disregard blocks all of us from addressing pay inequities, and the impacts, we know exist.

We can’t let the Republican minority block progress. Today it’s on equal pay. Next it’s on campaign finance reform. Will you send a donation to my campaign so I can keep fighting to abolish the filibuster and secure equal pay for equal work?

In New Mexico, on average, women earn 22 cents less per dollar than men. The pay gap is even worse for women of color. It’s not just unbelievable; it’s unacceptable.

The Paycheck Fairness Act would build on the Equal Pay Act. It would help women challenge pay discrimination and hold employers accountable for pay disparities.

It’s become painfully clear that abolishing the filibuster is our only path to passing important policies like this bill.

Please consider a donation of any amount so I can keep up my work to abolish the filibuster once and for all and ensure women are paid equally:

To build a better economy for all New Mexicans, we need to build a more equitable economy — one that values the work of men and women equally. Let’s work together to make it happen.
