A nightmare scenario got a little closer to reality this weekend. While appearing on a conservative talk radio show, former President Trump pitched the idea that he might run for Congress in 2022 in order to become Speaker of the House of Representatives.
This would be an unmitigated disaster for Democrats. Imagine all the investigative power -- including the power to impeach the president -- in the hands of Donald Trump. With his loyal cult of followers in the Republican conference, the work of Congress would grind to a halt and Washington would be thrown into chaos.
Even worse, Trump openly considered the possibility that he could use the power of impeachment to remove both President Biden and Vice President Harris from office. With the Speaker of the House sitting third in the line of succession, that would make Trump president once again -- without a national election.
Trump will bring a nearly insurmountable amount of name recognition and financial resources to his campaign for Congress if he runs. The only way to completely ensure that this radical Republican scheme doesn't work is to make sure Democrats hold the majority in the House in 2022.
The prospect of Speaker Trump would generate massive enthusiasm among the far-right Republican base to turn out for House elections in every corner of the country. We need to prepare for this possibility right now -- the longer we wait, the bigger the advantage Trump will give Republicans if he runs.
