John -
On Friday, an extremist judge in San Diego issued a ruling upending California’s 32-year long assault weapons ban.
We are outraged and alarmed by this misguided decision, in which Judge Benitez compared assault weapons to Swiss Army knives and claimed that more Californians died from the COVID-19 vaccine than mass shootings.
California activists fought hard to secure and maintain an assault weapons ban to prevent mass tragedies in our state, and one ruling by an extremist judge threatens to eliminate decades of progress.
If a judicial assault on gun safety can happen in California, it can happen anywhere.
The gun lobby continues to advance extreme positions on the Second Amendment in courts across the country, including the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court is set to hear a case on New York’s concealed carry permitting law this fall—the first Second Amendment case the Court has taken up since Amy Coney Barrett joined the bench.
In the California lawsuit and others across the country, we’re keeping up the fight against the NRA’s reckless campaigns to strike down the laws that keep our families and communities safe. Your support, regardless of the amount, will help us continue to take on the NRA and defend our hard-fought victories.
Thank you,
Robyn
