NPR: Black Voters Sue Over Mississippi's Jim Crow-Era Election Law

We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to shatter the glass ceiling in Mississippi and elect Jennifer Riley Collins as the first African American woman ever to serve statewide. But under current law, even if she wins a majority of the vote, Jennifer isn't guaranteed to become the Attorney General of Mississippi.

That's because under Mississippi law, a candidate needs to win a majority of the popular vote AND a majority of the state's legislative districts, which have been historically gerrymandered to lock Democrats out.

It's a disgraceful relic of discrimination still enshrined into the law, and it's designed specifically to stop black candidates from winning.

That's why former US AG Eric Holder's organization is supporting a lawsuit by concerned black voters in Mississippi to dismantle the racist law. It's undemocratic and potentially unconstitutional.

We urgently need Democrats to stand with concerned Mississippians in this lawsuit and demand an end to this discriminatory law that could stop the first African American woman from being elected to statewide office. Can we count on you, team?
