Dear advocates and community members,
This past Sunday, a horrific crime that is being investigated as an act of terrorism in the city of London in Ontario, Canada, has claimed the lives of four members of a Muslim family.
As the Afzaal family took an evening stroll, a car jumped the curb striking the family. The cause? Their Islamic faith. Four members of the family were murdered in this act of Islamophobic terrorism, with one survivor still in critical condition.
We mourn the innocent lives lost, targeted simply for being Muslim.
Let’s make it clear. We must address anti-Muslim bigotry because anti-Muslim bigotry kills. Islamophobia kills. Xenophobia kills. White supremacy kills. Our prayers are with the loved ones of the Afzaal family. "He was a family guy, very much involved in the community, a regular member of our mosque, a really, really great father...He loved to walk with his family. Almost every evening, they walked," -Neighbor of the Afzaal family.
"There is evidence that this was a planned, premeditated act, motivated by hate." -Detective Superintendent Paul Waight, London police department.
"This is a terrorist attack on Canadian soil, and should be treated as such." -Mustafa Farooq, National Council of Canadian Muslims.
Today, we also mourn the passing of our dear friend and community leader, Tarek Al-Kadri. “When you’re born, you’re crying and everyone around you is smiling. Make sure you live a good and noble life so when you die everyone is crying and you’re the one smiling.” -Tarek Al-Kadri
Tarek Al-Kadri, a prominent Yemeni American leader in Dallas, Texas, made immeasurable contributions in protecting the liberty of those in need and dedicating his life to defending the human rights of Muslims, at home and abroad, his community, and his family. On top of running a successful flooring company, Al-Kadri founded the Muslim Legal Fund of America, to safeguard the rights of Muslims wrongfully prosecuted, and Pure Hands, a non-profit organization dedicated to delivering humanitarian aid and alleviating poverty in Yemen.
Tarek Al-Kadri has left a legacy of six children, along with thousands of people from the Yemeni and Muslim American community inspired to follow in his selfless footsteps. May Allah grant him the highest place in Jannah. Ameen.
In solidarity through this time of mourning,
