That’s the world we envision, which is a stark contrast to what President Nixon envisioned when he declared the war on drugs 50 years ago. We know this so-called war was never actually about the safety and health of our communities. It was about criminalizing, arresting, and incarcerating people fighting for racial justice and against the Vietnam War.

As we mark the grim 50-year anniversary of Nixon’s war on drugs, the harms are tragically clear—the drug war is a dangerous tool of racial and social control. It has seeped into every aspect of our society from policing to education to housing to immigration.

In the past few months, thanks to member support, we secured some big victories. State by state, marijuana is becoming legal, and the momentum is building for federal marijuana reform. Oregon has become the first state to shift to a health approach to drugs, by decriminalizing the personal use and possession of all drugs, and expanding access to treatment and other health services. We also worked with a coalition of partners to get Congress to repeal the “drug question” that made students ineligible for federal financial aid if they had been convicted of a drug crime.

Even as we celebrate these groundbreaking victories, we understand that there is still much work to be done. Did you know there were over 1.5 million drug arrests in 2019 alone – the vast majority for simple possession? And due to targeted policing, surveillance, and punishment tactics, a disproportionate number of those arrested are Black, Latinx, and Indigenous. The drug war devastation of the last 50 years must stop.
