Dear John,

At a time when more than 10,000 Americans are turning 65 every day — and the number of seniors is projected to double by 2050 — it is crucial that older Americans can rely on a strong Social Security Administration (SSA) to field their questions or provide help. But for years SSA has been underfunded.

That’s why we are pleased by President Biden’s commitment to improving SSA’s customer service for Social Security beneficiaries. In his FY2022 budget plan, he proposes a $1.3 billion (or 9.7%) funding increase for the SSA, which has seen deep cuts over the past decade and has struggled to provide adequate customer service, before and during the pandemic.

Beneficiaries have endured shuttered field offices, countless hours on hold for assistance on SSA’s toll-free number, and painfully long delays awaiting Social Security Disability Insurance hearings. And some beneficiaries have had to overcome onerous obstacles imposed by the former Trump Administration to prevent beneficiaries from receiving the benefits they’ve earned and are counting on for a secure retirement.

Bottom line, imposing hardships on Social Security beneficiaries to receive information or help from SSA can undermine public support for Social Security itself — which is ultimately the goal of those in Washington who want to destroy this popular and effective program.

That’s why the National Committee is counting on your support as we fight to preserve Americans’ access to vital SSA services, improve customer service and thereby protect the Social Security program itself from being weakened in an insidious way. These are your earned benefits on the line — because decent service in administering Social Security is itself part of those benefits . It’s vital we fight to strengthen them, and with your supporting gift today in whatever amount you can safely afford, that is exactly what we will continue to do!

As our past victories have shown, when National Committee members and supporters rally together for a cause they care about Congress will listen!

Sincerely,

Max Richtman
