Democrats won an important victory last week in a race that tells us a lot about our chances in 2022. State Rep. Melanie Stansbury soundly defeated Republican Mark Moores in the race for New Mexico's first Congressional district, recently vacated by Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland.
So what does this mean for Democratic hopes in 2022? First, the good news.
Rep. Stansbury ran on an unabashedly progressive platform, calling for paid family leave and a $15 minimum wage. Even better, that platform allowed her to absolutely crush Moores -- Stansbury won by over 24 points. That's better than President Biden's 23 point margin and Haaland's 16 point win in 2020. This race was another example that when Democrats run on progressive ideas that will help people live with dignity, we win.
There are still areas of concern after this race, though.
This district has trended towards the Democrats in recent years and isn't the best example of tougher purple districts we need to win in 2022 to expand our House majority. More importantly, New Mexico is controlled by Democrats who haven't instituted some of the draconian voter suppression laws that will make it even harder for Democrats to compete on an even playing field.
The bottom line? Progressive policies are massively popular and can win elections, but we're going to have to do a lot more work to get that message out in the 2022 midterms.
