John,
For far too long in this country, women have earned pennies on the dollar to men for the same jobs. Val thinks it’s about time we change that. If you agree, add your name to urge the U.S. Senate to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act.
Frankly, pay equity for women is just one of the many problems facing women in the workplace — and the pandemic has only made matters worse.
Since the start of the pandemic, millions of women have left the U.S. workforce — some have been furloughed or laid off, but others have left to care for their children in the absence of affordable childcare. It’s clear the pandemic has only exacerbated gender inequity in the workplace, from a lack of paid family leave for employees, to the persistent gender pay gap.
On average, a woman in the U.S. who works full-time all year is paid just 82 cents for every dollar a man is paid. The gap widens for women of color, with Black women making 63 cents on the dollar, Latina women making 55 cents on the dollar, Native American women making 60 cents on the dollar, and Asian American and Pacific Islander women making just 52 cents. This is unacceptable.
The good news is that the U.S. Senate reconvened this week and could soon vote on a crucial piece of legislation that would take meaningful action to address pay inequity for women in America: the Paycheck Fairness Act.
This legislation would close loopholes in the Equal Pay Act, protect employees from retaliation for discussing their salaries with co-workers, and hold employers accountable for pay disparities in their workplaces. It would also make it easier for those who believe they are the victim of pay discrimination to take part in class-action lawsuits that challenge systemic pay discrimination.
Val understands just how important it is that our workplaces support women and treat workers fairly — all workers. She supports legislation like the Paycheck Fairness Act and will fight in the U.S. Senate to address gender inequity in the workforce.
