Hi John,

On the first day of Pride, Florida’s governor signed a bill into law barring transgender girls from competing in school athletics. Seventy-five bills targeting trans youth athletes have been introduced in state legislatures in 2021 and nine states have adopted bans—and this is happening in a year when our school playing fields have been emptied due to the pandemic . I am angered by this show of bigotry and saddened by the impact it is already having on trans youth, who face too many obstacles to full and equal access at school.

All of this underscores how critically important it is for us to pass the Equality Act , a bill that will set a national standard for transgender and LGBQ+ rights across the country. This foundational legislation amends the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and other civil rights laws to establish explicit federal nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ+ people in housing, employment, public education, credit, public spaces, federally funded programs, and jury service.

The Equality Act was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives in January, but the Senate has yet to take it up. No one’s quality of life should depend upon their state or zip code— it’s time for the Senate to pass the Equality Act [[link removed]] . Can we count on you to write a note to your Senators asking them to end discrimination against all LGBTQ+ students in every school?

Write Your Senator [[link removed]]Let’s make schools places where all young people can thrive and reach their full potential by making our voices heard in the Senate and across the country. With your support, we’ll be one step closer to ensuring LGBTQ+ young people can live as their truest selves in schools and beyond.

In solidarity,
