Dear Allies,

This week, we are sharing two upcoming and exciting webinars, including an updated Public Charge State of Play webinar from experts from the PIF Coalition. We are also sharing startling new research from FRAC on dropping participation rates in SNAP among households with a non-citizen.

PIF State of Play Webinar

The Biden Administration ended the Trump-era public charge policy back in March of this year, but now what? Please join us on June 22 from 1-2pm ET / 10-11am PT for a Public Charge State of Play webinar. PIF coalition experts will describe the changes in the public charge regulations in the U.S. and abroad, share new and recently updated resources to support partners’ public education and outreach efforts, and explain what we hope to see next from the administration in terms of outreach and education to stem the chilling effect, and rulemaking to modernize and codify the 1999 field guidance.

Navigator Funding Webinar from Young Invincibles

Last month, the Biden Administration announced there will be $80 million devoted to funding the Navigator program this year - the largest amount of funding in the history of the program. On Wednesday, June 9 at 1pm ET, Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, Community Catalyst, National Immigration Law Center, and Young Invincibles will host an informational webinar for organizations interested in applying for Navigator funding. Attendees will learn about how to apply for funding, and hear perspectives from current Navigators. We highly encourage organizations that primarily serve immigrants, communities of color, and other groups that experience higher rates of uninsurance to apply.

New Research From FRAC

A new Food Research & Action Center (FRAC) analysis of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Quality Control data finds that national participation in SNAP among U.S. citizen children in households with a non-citizen dropped by 22.5 percent from fiscal year 2018 to  fiscal year 2019 -- a decrease that is five times greater than that of the decrease in participation among U.S. citizen children in citizen-only households.

PIF Resource Roundup

The PIF team has been hard at work since March to update our Know Your Rights materials. For your convenience, we’ve rounded up the most up-to-date versions of our materials, which are available on our website and translated into Arabic, Chinese, Haitian Creole, Korean, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

Public Charge in the News

  • Voice of OC – SNAP enrollment partner’s column says immigrant families remain deterred by the Trump public charge regs, despite their reversal.

  • City Limits – New pandemic rent relief program draws 7K+ applications in 4 hours, with a quote from PIF partner Legal Aid Society.

  • Pagosa Daily Post – Awesome commentary by former state lawmakers who crafted 2006 legislation barring immigrants from safety net services are now backing legislation to reverse those restrictions, writing “Our compromise was a mistake, one we’ve long regretted.”

In Solidarity,

Eddie Carmona & Renato Rocha, on behalf of the PIF Team
