Women on average still only make 82 cents for every $1 a white man makes

John, for every strong woman, there is a man who probably gets paid more for doing the same job.

This problem should have been solved decades ago with the Equal Pay Act. But because of loopholes in that law, women on average still only make 82 cents for every $1 a white man makes. And for women of color, the numbers are much worse. That has to end now.

We tell little girls, "You can be anything you set your mind to." And while they can be anything they want to be, the reality is they can't expect to be paid fairly for their work. It's a moral outrage—and a drain on the economy—that holds everyone back.

I've co-sponsored legislation to close the wage gap in every single Congress I've been part of. And we have a real opportunity—today—to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act in the Senate and eliminate wage discrimination, once and for all.

We need 20,000 people—about 100,000x the difference between white men's and the average women's pay—to add their name right now to demand equal pay. When I head to the Senate floor later today to vote on the Paycheck Fairness Act, I want to show we have a groundswell of support behind us.

Women—particularly women of color and low-income families—have been among the hardest hit by the pandemic. We cannot expect to see our economy recover, or regain the jobs lost, until we pay women fairly for their work.

The House passed the Paycheck Fairness Act in April. Now, it’s time for the Senate to do the same. Please, add your name to say you’re with us in this fight.

Thank you for taking a stand.
