We celebrate World Oceans Day with the news that Born Free’s orca family is flourishing in the waters off Vancouver Island, Canada.

Springer has a remarkable story. She was just two when her mother died and she became lost near Seattle, USA, too small to survive alone. The entertainment industry wanted to put her in captivity, but thanks to our OrcaLab colleagues we were able to identify her unique calls and take her 250 miles by boat back to her wild family pod, near Vancouver Island, Canada.

Today, enjoying life in the wild, Springer has two calves of her own – Spirit born in 2013 and Storm born in 2017.

ADOPT SPRINGER TODAY ( [link removed] )

Unfortunately, not all stories turn out like Springer’s. Orca are under threat from fishing nets, plastic and chemical pollution and a reduction in food stocks due to overfishing. Cruelly separating individuals from their families in the wild to be kept in cramped tanks and exploited for entertainment is sadly still a big problem.

This World Oceans Day, please adopt an orca and support our vital work to protect Springer and her calves, and to safeguard the future of this intelligent mammal.
