Hi everyone,

As many of y'all know, our Chapter Convention is coming up very soon. And the National DSA Convention will be coming up in August. This Saturday at 12 PM, we will be holding our annual 'Candidate Forum' where our candidates for chapter leadership and for national Convention delegate will share their vision for New Orleans DSA in 2021-2022! Register for the call here. We will hear a "State of the Chapter" report as well as our Annual Membership and Treasurer Reports, and then we will have a candidate forum and q+a. You can register for this call here.

If you have any questions, please let us know! We want to hear from you, and we want everyone to feel equipped and empowered to participate in this process. You can reach New Orleans DSA chapter leadership at [email protected]

Also, if you are a member of DSA, you can expect an email invite to our new, members-only Slack! Keep an eye out for those invitations in your email inbox.

Although this month our chapter is very focused on a smooth transition from the 2020-2021 leadership to the 2021-2022 leadership, that doesn't mean that the campaign work stops! The #HelpNotHandcuffs campaign is in full swing. Thank you to everyone who submitted public comment last week - the City Council voted unanimously to form a task force dedicated to exploring the creation of a non-police crisis response. This is a first, but critical, step! Today, we will be canvassing in District C at 2 PM. We'll meet at Cafe Istanbul (2372 St. Claude). Sign up here, and see you there!

To stay in the loop with future #HelpNotHandcuffs canvassing efforts, we have set up a group chat with OPPRC! You can join via this link to get important updates and connect while out in the field. And take lots of photos and selfies while you're out there so we can share and spread the word about this important effort! These are the three remaining canvassing dates:

  • June 8: Canvassing for C; 6pm meeting at (Cafe Istanbul (2372 St Claude Ave, 70117)
  • June 13: Canvassing for D; 2-4pm meeting at (Corpus Christi Community Resource Center, 2022 St Bernard Ave, 70116)
  • June 20: Canvassing for E; 2-4pm meeting at (The Living School, 6003 Bullard Ave Suite 16, 70128)

Solidarity,

DSA New Orleans Local Council

P.S. New to DSA? Check out our chapter's new member resources here. You can also always email [email protected] with questions about how to get involved or about the work our chapter is doing. And if you're interested in joining our chapter's Slack, email [email protected].

Or not yet a member? The most important tool that the working class has is organization. We're strong when we fight together. We have to build a durable, mass political organization to wield the kind of power we need to win real change in our society. If you aren't a dues-paying member of DSA yet, join here

Organizing Call for Colombia

On May 14, DSA held a panel with Colombian frontline activists confronting state violence in the Cali and Cauca, to hear about the actors on the ground and analysis of the struggle ahead. As the state violence and killings continue, many of us ask how we can stand in solidarity with Colombia. On Thursday, June 10, at 7PM EST we are getting to work. Join us to hear about concrete ways to take action and get plugged into Colombia solidarity work. Spread the word w/ #SOSColombia #ColombiaResiste. Register for the call here.
