Dear John, My name is Cathy and my pronouns are she/her. I’m a proud PFLAG mom to a nonbinary teen, whose pronouns are they/them -- and whose rights are under attack. All I want is for my teen to live with dignity and respect, with rights just like everyone else. Apparently, Indiana legislators don’t agree -- the State House introduced a bill earlier this year which, if passed, would make it illegal for transgender and nonbinary people to use a bathroom that does not correspond with their sex assigned at birth. This leaves my teen especially vulnerable at school because, in order to graduate, they need to complete a swimming requirement for PE. While the pandemic allowed my teen to skip the requirement this year, it may not be possible next year -- leaving them open to bullying, harassment, and the ability to use a safe locker room in accordance with their gender identity. I’m fighting back against this harmful legislation, and I’m grateful to PFLAG National for always having my back -- with resources and support to effectively advocate for the life of my teen and my family’s safety.
