Should DSA-LA nominate Maikiko and Sydney to run for DSA's National Leadership?
|
DSA Los Angeles has had two members declare their interest in running for a seat on the National Political Committee (NPC), the highest decision-making body in our organization between conventions.
DSA-LA members can vote to nominate them to run using a ballot that has just been released and will appear in your inbox from "SurveyMonkey". Ballots will be accepted until 4pm on Sunday, June 13. If you do not see a ballot, please contact [email protected]
Note "Nomination should not be seen as an endorsement of a candidate or their politics, but as an affirmation that the member is active in the work of DSA and is constructive and comradely towards their fellow members."

Westside Branch-Building Phonebank – New Member Outreach
|
Thursday, June 10 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
|
Westside comrades – join Westside Branch Coordinators, Captains, and Neighborhood Organizers for a phonebank dedicated to reaching out to all new members in our growing branch to connect them to DSA-LA’s Neighborhood Solidarity Program.
We’ll be getting in touch with new Westside members to learn about their (and their neighbors’) housing situations during the crisis and opportunities for neighborhood-specific mutual aid organizing – and we’ll be connecting them to ongoing hyperlocal organizing in their area.
If you’ve never phonebanked before, no worries! This hosted phonebank is a great way to get involved in our branch’s work, and there will be time built in to walk comrades through the script and the overall process, step-by-step.
Join us to make calls designed to build working class power, block by block on the Westside. ✊

Mutual Aid’s Rules & Roberts Robert’s Rules Training
|
Saturday, June 12 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm
|
The Mutual Aid Committee is bringing back our parliamentary decision-making training, based on Paolo Pedercini’s RULES AND ROBERTS, a democratic role-playing game for 3-3000 people that uses Robert’s Rules of Order as its base. This 3-hour campaign will give you a fun, fresh, and enjoyable introduction to the sometimes-confusing system of parliamentary process that we use both in the Mutual Aid Committee, and in DSA-LA in general.
If you’re interested in participating, please make sure to check out the rulebook here, and fill out the (quick!) character sheet, to prepare for your JOURNEY into the LAND of PARLIAMENTARY FANTASY, which RESEMBLES but is LEGALLY DISTINCT FROM other POPULAR ROLE-PLAYING GAMES.

Coastal Areas Neighborhood Meeting
|
Sunday, June 13 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm
|
Neighborhood Meetings are part of DSA-LA’s Neighborhood Solidarity Program—our chapter’s campaign to strengthen and grow socialist organization by uniting with our neighbors through tenant organizing, mutual aid work, and political study. This and all other Coastal Areas Neighborhood Meetings are open to new and long-time comrades who live in the range of coastal cities and areas, including: Santa Monica, Venice, Marina Del Rey, Playa Del Rey, Playa Vista, Del Rey, Mar Vista, Marina del Rey, Malibu, Topanga, and the Pacific Palisades.
Our third Coastal Areas Neighborhood Meeting will build on discussions and projects outlined in our previous meetings, including organizing work in solidarity with Street Watch in Venice and Mar Vista.
Our study topic for this meeting will be Socialist Struggles for Decommodified Public Goods. Totaling ~20 pages, the following set of recommended excerpts and articles provide a foundation for interactive discussion:
Labour Wants to Free Us From the Market, by Thomas Hanna / Saoirse Gowen (Jacobin Magazine, 2019) This piece goes over decommodification through the lens of government intervention and how universal programs—specifically the NHS—can be used to take public goods out of the market.
Decolonial Feminist Economics: A Necessary View for Strengthening Social and Popular Economy by Natalia Quiroga Diaz (Viewpoint Magazine, 2015) Along with presenting some different forms and features of solidarity/popular economies, the reading contextualizes them with examples from South America focusing on a decolonial and feminist perspective.
Seven Ways to Build the Solidarity Economy — by Emily Kawano (Open Democracy, 2018) A brief explanation of some ways individuals can foster a solidarity economy.
