John,
We have come a long way on achieving rights for LGBTQ folks. After all, it has only been 13 years since Prop 8 passed here in California banning marriage equality.
But this Pride Month, I am reflecting on just how far we have to go, in part due to elected leaders like Mike Garcia.
Earlier in February, Mike voted against the Equality Act, a hugely important piece of federal legislation that would provide long-overdue civil rights protections for LGBTQ Americans.
This bill passed the House in February -- no thanks to Mike Garcia -- and now needs to pass the Senate so President Biden can sign it into law.
Can you add your name right now to call on the Senate to pass the Equality Act?
Frustratingly, 29 states lack basic civil rights protections for LGBTQ Americans -- and we are seeing a concerted and coordinated effort by the far right to infringe on their civil rights, degrade their personhood, and deny them health care. And don’t get me started on the attacks on trans kids.
The Equality Act would prevent discrimination in our housing, education, public services, and lending systems -- and much more. It would provide much-needed and long-awaited protections for folks across the country.
It just needs to pass the Senate. Can you add your name to show how much support there is for a swift passage of the Equality Act?
Thanks,
Christy Smith
