NEWS FROM POWER TO DECIDE
Keep the Power On
Thank you to everyone who recognized Talking is Power Month by participating in our recent Twitter Storm, sharing our blogs and conversation prompts, or talking to a young person in your life about sex, love, and relationships. You helped us make #TalkingIsPower 2021 a success.
More than half of adults who had conversations with a young person in the past year say the conversation went “very well.” So, just because May and #TalkingIsPower have ended doesn’t mean you should stop talking. Check out all of the amazing resources we posted over the last month to start a conversation around sex, love, relationships, and birth control with a young person in your life today!
Plus, check out these blogs supporting #SexEdForAll and consider how you can support the movement:
Power Talk: #TalkingIsPower Edition
Our CEO, Dr. Raegan McDonald-Mosley, and Senior Manager of Programs, Mackenzie Piper; Vanessa Geffrard, Founder of VagEsteem; and Dr. Jennifer Lincoln, board-certified OB/GYN sat down for a conversation about why it’s vital for parents and champions to talk to the young people in their lives about sex, love, and relationships. Moderated by Ms. Magazine, you can watch a recording of this fascinating discussion on YouTube.
Recognizing Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
In May, we recognize Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month and the unique health care challenges faced by these communities. AAPI communities face increasingly difficult reproductive health challenges, including access to abortion and cultural stigmas around sexuality that can make it difficult for young people to learn from their champions. We believe that every person deserves access to the full range of contraceptive options, including abortion, as well as all of the information that they need to make informed decisions that align with their intentions for the future.

Addressing Unconscious Bias
Nearly all of those who have taken Power to Decide’s One Key Question® online training over the past year say they are “very confident” in identifying and addressing unconscious bias and promoting reproductive autonomy, according to a new survey of participants. OKQ provides a framework for health care and social service providers to routinely ask patients about pregnancy desires and offer personalized counseling and care and addresses unconscious bias.
Since Fall of 2020, 447 providers have signed up for our OKQ online training and 328 have signed on to take the supplemental Preconception and Contraception Pathways to Care training.
Other survey findings include:
- Nearly all said they were “very engaged” throughout the training experience and “very confident” in identifying resources and tools on contraception and pre/interconception care for their patients/clients.
- 97% learned new information and strategies that could be applied to their work or practice.
- 89% intend to implement OKQ into their work or practice.
