ENDORSEMENT:
Curtis Sliwa for New York City Mayor

The New York Young Republican Club is proud to endorse Curtis Sliwa for Mayor of New York City for the 2021 New York City mayoral election. Sliwa is a native New Yorker and a Catholic of Polish and Italian descent who was born and raised in Canarsie, Brooklyn. He is the founder of the Guardian Angels, a radio talk show host, and a longstanding political commentator.

Sliwa founded the Guardian Angels in 1979 to protect New Yorkers from the crime that was ruining lives. Ever since then, he has unfailingly been tough on crime and served as an effective advocate for safe streets, safe schools, and safe subways. He intends to re-fund the NYPD to keep New Yorkers safe and to restore our city, and he will work to reverse ill-conceived, leftist “bail reform” so that criminals are unable to return to communities and continually re-offend while awaiting trial.

Sliwa puts action behind his words, and he has done so with an increasingly high profile during the COVID pandemic. During the summer 2020 riots that destroyed small businesses and communities when Bill De Blasio handicapped the NYPD, Sliwa and the Guardian Angels defended New Yorkers by battling looters and rioters while sustaining injuries themselves.  Sliwa also launched a campaign to protect Asian communities from targeted attacks.

Given his decades-long reputation, some might believe that Sliwa’s focus is solely on crime. This is not the case. Sliwa has a full slate of positions that aim to improve New York City’s economy from the bottom up. He calls for property tax overhaul to correct disparities that leave multi-billion-dollar universities free-riding off small businesses and individual property owners. Under Sliwa, universities like Columbia University and New York University that have decimated their neighborhoods and abused their non-profit status will pay their fair share of taxes.

On education, Sliwa intends to retain the Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT) and Gifted Talented programs, which help New York City schools provide merit-based, differentiated education to intelligent students that set them up for success in the future. He also plans to create more vocational training for students and to increase the number of charter schools, supporting a broad swathe of students by giving them tangible skills and access to teachers unbeholden to unions.

Sliwa, a voice of fiscal reason, intends to use taxpayer dollars efficiently, and he argues against other mayoral candidates’ platforms of overspending on mandates that are fiscally irresponsible.

Sliwa has strong ideas for New York, and he also has classic, New Yorker chutzpah. A noted fan of electronic dance music (EDM), Sliwa embodies the work hard, play hard attitude. He is an advocate for nightlife and has roundly condemned Democrats’ forced closure of New York’s clubs, bars, and concerts.

The New York Young Republican Club emphatically and enthusiastically endorses Curtis Sliwa in the 2021 New York City mayoral election and looks forward to working with him to re-fund the police, fight crime, eliminate disparities in property taxes, improve education, and prevent overspending on city mandates.

Endorsement: Vanessa Simon For City Council (CD-31)

The New York Young Republican Club is proud to endorse Vanessa Simon for the New York City Council District 31 in the 2021 general election. Vanessa was born in Florida and raised by Haitian immigrants in Long Island New York. Vanessa currently works in Human Resources at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where she serves as the go-to advisor for the Museum’s Senior Vice President.

Vanessa’s work ethic speaks volumes to her family’s values of hard work and perseverance. After receiving a degree in Political Science from SUNY Geneseo, Vanessa hit the ground running. She became a member of the Suffolk County Young  Republicans. She also partnered with KABOOM!, a national non-profit to construct a beautiful new playground in Jamaica, Queens. During the pandemic, she dedicated time to a non-profit homeless center, the Restfull Nights Organization, and to a faith-based rehab center, the Faith Mission Alcohol Crisis Center. She provided both of these facilities with essential care kits and cooked meals for their local communities during the pandemic. In addition, Vanessa captained a project funded by Target to develop a new library that prioritized a safe and healthy learning environment for the children within her community. She organized 250 volunteers to make this possible. Vanessa is also a volunteer lector for St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

Vanessa’s faith, devotion to family, and tangible duty to the community set her apart. She shows great promise as a candidate who genuinely strives to make her community a better, more principled place. The New York Young Republican Club urges all voters in the 31st City Council District of New York City to support Vanessa on her quest to replenish and revive the quality of life and living in South Queens and New York City. We commend Vanessa for her dedication to the community and look forward to watching the progression of District 31.
