“… lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21 (ESV) Jesus tells us to store our treasure in heaven, not on earth where it can easily be destroyed. He challenges His followers to avoid selfishly accumulating items they do not need and instead urges them instead to do things on earth that will have an effect for eternity. What a great reminder. It is easy to get caught up in things that are only temporary.
By following Jesus’ charge we avoid the emptiness resulting from filling our lives with extravagant things or meaningless activities. Instead our hearts turn to the needs of those around us. Jesus’ charge is about more than just financial giving, but also about teaching our hearts to desire the treasure of heaven — Jesus — and to love like Him.
