North Carolina Republicans Leave No Doubt: They Are the Party of Trump

In a rambling, semi-coherent rant lasting an hour and a half, the former guy made his first public appearance outside Florida on Saturday night as he addressed a packed house at the 2021 North Carolina Republican Convention in Greenville. Trump was brought to the stage by North Carolina GOP Chair Michael Whatley who told the crowd the Saturday gathering was the largest single fundraising event in the history of the state's Republican party.

Trump's appearance is reportedly intended to kick off a series of rallies and fundraisers as the twice-impeached former Commander-in-Chief works to solidify his control over the Republican party.  On Saturday, he flexed his political muscles by endorsing U.S. Representative Ted Budd for North Carolina's U.S. Senate seat in 2022 to replace Richard Burr who is not seeking reelection. Trump announced the surprise endorsement after his daughter-in-law and personal trainer Lara Trump announced she wouldn't seek the office "for now."

Trump's remarks were devoid of details and light on substance as he touted his alleged accomplishments and railed against Joe Biden, Anthony Fauci, radical Democrats, immigration, critical race theory, gun control and other issues from a right-wing media greatest hits list. He didn't specifically restate his debunked claim that he actually won the 2020 Presidential election, but he did say the election "was by far the most corrupt election in the history of our country" He praised efforts to overturn the election and to make voting harder in the future.

NC GOP Chair Michael Whately announced the formation of a Republican "Election Integrity" group, which seems puzzling in light of the fact that Trump stated that North Carolina lacked the voter fraud that was rampant in the states where he lost.

North Carolina Democrats countered Trump's appearance with a "Day of Action" Saturday to contact voters in support of Democratic candidates.

Demonstration at Senator Burr’s Office — June 10

When: Thursday June 10 at Noon

Where: 201 N. Front Street #809, Wilmington

STIR The BURR for S-1. Join concerned Wilmingtonians and folks in other NC towns with Burr offices to urge Senator Richard Burr to stand for truth, democracy, ending corruption and fighting voter suppression. Our democracy is under attack by Republican state legislatures.  We need federal legislation to reverse that trend.  S-1 will be brought up in the Senate for a vote in June, possibly as soon as June 21st.  Since Burr voted for impeachment (and was censured by his own party), he apparently has a recollection of his oath to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. We are hoping that he can be persuaded that saving democracy will burnish his legacy.

You can RSVP for the event here.

Building Blue Online Training Retreat -- June 11 -13

When: Friday, June 11, 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday hours TBA.

In-Person County Executive Committee Meeting To Choose New SEC Member -- June  21

When: Monday, June 21 at  6:30 p.m.

Where: NHCDP HQ, 5041 New Centre Drive, Wilmington NC

This will be the first in-person countywide meeting since February 2020.

Sonya Bennetone-Patrick was elected Chair of the 7th Congressional District Democratic Party and as a result, she will be an ex-officio member of the State Executive Committee, potentially freeing up a New Hanover SEC seat.  We hope to fill the SEC seat at this meeting. The vote will require that a quorum be present, so if you are a Precinct Chair or Vice Chair, a CEC Officer, or an SEC member, please plan to attend or send a proxy. Pursuant to Section 12.05 of the Plan of Organization, CEC members who are unable to attend may appoint a proxy to attend the meeting on their behalf, so long as they notify the NHCDP Chair or Secretary, in writing, before the meeting is called to order. If you are a CEC member and are unable to attend, please send a proxy to represent you. If you are a precinct officer, you should designate an active Democrat from your precinct.

Upcoming Democratic Events To Note On Your Calendar
