On the holiest of holy days, tragedy has struck yet another Jewish community. Seventy-four years since the end of World War II, two people are dead after an antisemitic attack that started outside of a synagogue in Germany.

A man armed with a machine gun and grenades livestreamed his attack on a synagogue in Halle, Germany where worshippers were gathering for Yom Kippur services. He murdered one person after failing to gain entry to the synagogue and then, shortly before his arrest, killed another person in an assault on a nearby restaurant.

We pray for the victims and their families and we stand in solidarity with the Jews of Germany.

Please take a moment to tell the proud German Jewish community that we stand behind them, and tell the world that an attack on one Jew is an attack on all.

AJC’s Berlin Ramer Institute [link removed] is on the ground, working with German authorities and the Jewish community to provide support during this time of crisis.

The murderous rampage comes just days after a man brandishing a knife and screaming "f*ck Israel" attempted to attack a Berlin synagogue shortly before Shabbat. He was subdued by security guards – and then shockingly released from German police custody.

Last year in Germany, violent antisemitic crimes rose by 86 percent to 69 reported incidents and antisemitic crimes in general increased by 20 percent to 1,799 cases.
