Yesterday, Donald Trump held a massive rally in North Carolina.
All indications are that Trump intends to resume these grotesque events — both to bask in the adoration of his enthralled MAGA masses as well as to incite their entrenched prejudices and hatreds.
Here are just a few things Trump said:
- “As we gather tonight our country is being destroyed before our very own eyes.”
- “The 2020 presidential election was by far the most corrupt election in the history of our country.”
- “That election will go down as the crime of the century.”
- “Our country is being destroyed by people who perhaps have no right to destroy it.”
- “I am not the one trying to undermine American democracy, I’m the one that's trying to save it.”
It’s tempting to want to put Donald Trump behind us.
After all, he is not currently the president of the United States. He has been kicked off Facebook and Twitter. And the media has finally stopped giving round-the-clock coverage to him and his gang of would-be plutocrats.
But, sadly, we can’t.
Because Donald Trump is the dominant figure in the Republican Party. Almost no Republican dares to cross him, and those who do are quickly swatted down.
Because it’s not just about fear of Trump or about Trump the demagogue. It’s about Trumpism — defined by anti-democratic, racist, xenophobic, neo-fascist, and crony-capitalist impulses that are fundamentally at odds with a democratic and decent society — which rules the Republican Party.
Because Republican politicians all across the country are adopting Trumpist policies — centered on making it harder to vote and easier for Republicans to overturn legitimate election results — that are an immediate risk to fair elections and the rule of law.
The Trumpism of today’s Republican Party is as severe a threat to democracy, multiculturalism, progressive values, and perhaps even humanity’s very survival as we’ve faced in generations.
As much as we may like to forget about Donald Trump, we must remain vigilant — against not only the man but also the movement that bears his name.
Please join me today in committing even more resolutely to these fundamental ideals:
Our democracy must be strengthened, not sabotaged. Diversity is something to embrace, not to fear. We should strive to make a better future, not to regress to some fantasy of the past. We deserve a country that does right by all of its people, not just rich white men.
Add your name.
Thanks for taking action.
For progress,
- Robert Weissman, President of Public Citizen
P.S. For half a century, Public Citizen has been advancing policies that put the needs of everyday Americans before the greed of billionaires and Big Business. That legacy of progress and that ongoing work could not matter more right now, as our nation transitions to a Joe Biden presidency that will be as progressive as we — you and Public Citizen, together — make it. We’re also busy undoing all the damage Trump did. And, like so many nonprofits and small businesses, we continue to experience financial strain related to the coronavirus pandemic. If you can, please make an emergency donation today to support the critical work we’re doing together or even join our popular Monthly Giving program. Thank you.
