The Issue: Retail Stores Selling Halloween "Fat Costumes"
When retail stores sell Halloween "fat costumes," this is weight stigma. These stores are making fun of a body type that is often associated with obesity.
"Fat costumes" spread the message that people with obesity are lazy, consumed by food and not smart. They teach adults and children that body shaming is okay. It is not. It is actually very harmful.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Using the OAC Action Center, contact major retail stores that we have identified and urge them to stop selling Halloween "fat costumes." This is an opportunity to educate about the serious disease of obesity and the dangers of weight stigma. The OAC has provided a letter for you, but you can add your own thoughts. We will do the work and send your letter off!
