Welcome to another edition of FT Now! It’s been another week of important national and statewide news, so let’s waste no time and get right to work! First up, Democrat candidate for Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe is exposing his blatant hypocrisy yet again. Next up, Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy slammed President Biden over his move to suspend oil drilling leases in the Arctic. Lastly, a new report reveals that red states are leading with the lowest unemployment rates in the country. No shock there!
McAuliffe criticized Youngkin over 2020 election views, but questioned Democrats' loss in 2000
What Happened:
Terry McAuliffe, 1 of 5 candidates running for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in Virginia, has been attacking Republican Glenn Younkgin for supposedly questioning the results of the 2020 presidential election (he hasn’t). Yet in 2000, McAuliffe didn’t hesitate to question the results of that presidential election.
Why You Should Care:
Youngkin has never claimed the 2020 election was ‘stolen’ and has acknowledged Joe Biden as the legitimate president. McAuliffe, on the other hand, was quoted in 2001 saying that Democrat base voters in Florida “worked their hearts and souls out in the presidential election only to have it taken from them."
What Happens Next:
Judging by his recent track record, McAuliffe’s hypocrisy will likely continue. The career politician attacked Youngkin last month for having ties to President Trump - but failed to mention his own connections to him.

Alaska Gov. Dunleavy shames Biden for Arctic drilling suspension: It's ‘all about canceling opportunity'
What Happened:
Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy slammed President Biden for his decision to suspend Arctic drilling leases.
Why You Should Care:
The decision to suspend leases, Gov. Dunleavy pointed out, will push American energy opportunities overseas. In turn, oil-rich global competitors with far less restrictions will benefit: "The Russians, the Chinese, the Saudis, the Iranians—they are laughing all the way to the bank.”
What Happens Next:
While President Biden’s move isn’t surprising (he banned oil and gas leases on Wyoming federal land in February), the long-term impacts will be harmful to our economy, national security, and independence.

Red states top those with lowest unemployment rates
What Happened:
According to a new report from the U.S. Commerce Department, Republican-led states reported the lowest unemployment rates in April. On the flip side, blue states reported the highest unemployment rates in the country.
Why You Should Care:
With America emerging from the COVID pandemic, Republican governors recognize that people need to get back to work. Twenty-two red states have already ended federal unemployment payments - a major hurdle for businesses trying to find people to hire.
What Happens Next:
Hopefully, other governors will join in ending federal unemployment payments to help businesses find workers as summer demand increases.
