Last week, the Republican Party showed just how far it's willing to go to cover up the truth about how radical members of Congress and Donald Trump supported the Jan. 6 insurrection. 35 GOP senators voted to kill a bipartisan commission to investigate those events. The bigger problem? The GOP didn't actually need a majority of votes to do that -- in fact, the vote was 54-35 in favor of the commission's creation.

Instead, McConnell's GOP used the filibuster to keep the commission from becoming a reality.

It's a story we've seen time and again with Senate Republicans, and because they are willing to weaponize the filibuster, Senate Democrats essentially need 60 votes to pass any bills in the chamber. After the commission vote failed, Democratic members of Congress and candidates took to social media with a single message: It's the filibuster or democracy.

Team, we worked so hard to flip the Senate. But if we don't abolish the filibuster and elect more Democrats who support eliminating it, Mitch McConnell will continue to obstruct our progressive values, which means we might never see important bills like the January 6 commission pass.
