When we talk about the insurrectionist wing of the Republican Party taking over, it can sound a little far-fetched. In America, we believe in democracy and the rule of law -- it's impossible for would-be fascists to take control of an entire major political party. Right?
Not according to Marjorie Taylor Greene. Last week, Greene bragged that she and Matt Gaetz are “taking charge” of the Republican Party.
The apparent new leaders of the GOP seem almost like comic book villains when you read their biographies. Marjorie Taylor Greene is an antisemitic QAnon believer. Matt Gaetz is an alleged sexual trafficker and one of Donald Trump's staunchest allies who has said of Trump, “I only regret that I have but one political career to give to my president.”
Both have been unapologetic about their support for the insurrectionists at the January 6 attack on the Capitol and have used their platforms as members of Congress as megaphones for the Big Lie that Trump won the 2020 election.
This Republican Party, led by Greene, Gaetz, and other extreme Trump loyalists, is a danger to our country. We can't give them any ground in 2022.
