Republicans are ratcheting up their radical rhetoric to a new and extraordinarily dangerous level. Michael Flynn, Donald Trump's disgraced former National Security Advisor, agreed with calls for a coup to reinstate Trump as President.
The remarks took place at a conference hosted by prominent supporters of QAnon and the Big Lie that Trump won the 2020 election. Flynn was asked by an audience member why what's happening in Myanmar couldn't happen in America -- that is, a military coup to overthrow the democratically elected leadership that has seen hundreds killed and brutalized. Flynn responded:
“No reason, I mean, it should happen here. No reason.”
It's bad enough that someone who once worked in the highest levels of national security in America is hanging out at an event attended by conspiracy theorists and insurrectionists, but now there is no hiding it -- Republicans are working inside and outside the system to foment unrest and distrust in American democracy.
The beating heart of the Republican Party is made up of far-right fundamentalists who want nothing less than for Donald Trump to be installed as a dictator -- by force if necessary.
Democrats cannot afford to lose elections. Every time we cede power to the GOP, they'll move us that much further towards fascism. That's why we need to prepare for 2022 now.
